Abstract text:

 Cell-based biosensors, combined with living cells, have emerged as promising biotechnical

tools in various fields. If cells are treated as the research objectives, cell-based biosensors can be used in fundamental biological research. On the other hand, cells are the sensitive elements that can sense various biophysical or biochemical signals and transduce them into changes in cell behaviours or properties that can be measured by biosensor systems. In this presentation, two studies on cell-based biosensors are introduced. One is about a multiparametric biosensor integrated with miniaturized enclosed polymeric chambers to assess water toxicity. This sensor contributes to increase the security of drinking water. The second study is about the electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) sensor based on flexible electronics technology. ECIS electrodes were fabricated on a stretchable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate and ECIS measurements on mammalian cells exposed to cyclic strain were performed. The stretchable ECIS biosensors simulate in vitro the dynamic environment of organism, such as pulsation, bending and stretching, which enables investigations on cell behavior that undergoes mechanical stimuli in biological tissue.

 

Biography:

Dr. Fang Li is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). Her research areas are biosensors, MEMS and NEMS, Lab-on-a-chip devices, piezoelectric transducers, and non-destructive evaluations. Dr. Li has her BS and MS degrees in Precision Instruments from Tsinghua University of Beijing, China. She received her Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008. After completing her doctoral studies, she worked for several years at Intelligent Automation, Inc., of Maryland, before joining NYIT’s faculty in 2012. Dr. Li has published over 20 peer-reviewed journal papers and 25+ conference papers. She is a member of IEEE, IEEE UFFC, ASME, and SAE and has served as a reviewer for many prestigious journals.
